info on inuit culture, people, social problems, education challenges, language

Christopher : "In Resolute kids were completely bored. There’s nothing to do in a 250 pers settlement. They really enjoyed spending time with us."

Felix: "- the kids nowadays grow up completely distinct to how their parents and the elders did. They have ipods, ipads, internet access etc. We suppose that the government subsidies the people for staying up there. But the younger generation seems to want to get out of there."

"Generally with the introduction of snow machines and junk food such as chips and Coca Cola, their whole lifestyle has changed hugely over the past decades."

I looked for some Information on a german website:

* "Inuit" means "people"
* Inuits are the natives of the country
* chang of a nomad life to a modern industrialised society
* religion: shamanism, many taboos
now: changes by proselitisation (Catholic...)
* changes in culture involving illnesses:
- accidents + suicide
- diabetes
- cardiovascular desease (fast food, western food)
- alcoholism (they don´t have the enzyme to break down the alcohol, because they are not used to since hundred of years like Europeans)
- drug addiction
- nicotine abuse

Their lifestyle, culture,...were destroyed and changed immensely. The same procedure with the Indiams of America:D

Henko! Thanks a lot for your links! I'm currently sending e-mails to some organisations, communities etc. and reading through what you have posted. One phrase I would like to quote...
"It's tough all around Nunavut. However, you don't come to Nunavut to live the dream, you come to build it. " - http://poverty-nunavut.blogspot.com/2011/05/living-in-nunavut-dream-become.html

http://www.pauktuutit.ca/ - Pauktuutit fosters greater awareness of the needs of Inuit women, advocates for equity and social improvements, and encourages their participation in the community, regional and national life of Canada.
And one more thing - I believe that this document on youth (last link posted by Henko)is something crucial! So many information, an enormous load of work!
